Today I got mail from the satellite guys, granting me rights to use the december 29 IKANOS pictures. The images is incredible clear and shows every road, every building. The resolution is one pixes equals one meter. This makes is alot easier to make a decent map! Thanks!

Have a look at the incredible pictures here: www.crisp.nus.edu.sg/tsunami/tsunami.html

I got to make a map!

Map1steditionI decided to put all pieces of information togehter and make something that I really think could be usefull. I will make a map. I got a mail from Tourism Authority of Thailand today where the informs me that they do not have a map showing Khao Lak. I have been searching for a map for so long now and I never found one.

I called all satellite companies I could find and asked for pictures of Khao Lak. And after a couple of days I found a very good picture shot just three days after the tsunami, by a sattelite named Ikanos. The picture is pretty good resolution… one meter per pixel. And there is almost no clouds covering the ground. A perfect tool to make a map!

I have great satellite pictures and maybe I can make a map from them? I called my father and asked how to do this. I thought he would know a little about those things, as he is an architect. But all I got from him was that it would be very difficult and that Thai authorites almost certainly allready got good maps… sigh…

My brother was more encouraging (also an architect), but could not give me much advice on how to proceed. Other then answer my fairly basic question on how to measure the satellite pictures I got when one pixes is equal to one meter… hehe

I registered the domains www.khaolakmap.se, www.khaolakmap.com and www.khaolakmap2004.com yesterday and I published the first embryo of a map today. It got just a few resorts but I know I will be able to add more very soon. I believe it is very important to publish somehing very quick. That way the data I have colected can become usefull imideately and also I will begin to get input from people who know the place. The map will help it self to grow.

I have good use of the resort webpages that I saved in january. I can compare the pictures I find in them with the satellite pictures and the pictures that the helicopter crew member Phenix shot. And that way identify the resorts. It seems that each resort got a unique shaped pool and this is a fact that I can take advantege of.
