Monday, April 11th, 2005

Yesterday I contacted the “RSOS-Rådet för samordning och stöd efter flodvågskatastrofen”, a swedish ad-hok institution that was founded in january to coope with issues around the catastophe. For example to help relatives and survivors and to make cooperation between authorities smoother.

I want to ask them if they want to help me out makin the map and maybe a book about Khao Lak. And today I got a very positive answer from their secretary.

As the article only was published i Swedish, and I knew many english speaking people would like to read it, I just started to translate it. I also promted the newspaper to do a proper translation themselves. It is alot of text, so it probably will take a week or more to do it.

It is much harder then I though it would be. Hard because it is very, very well written. Also becouse the subject is so delicate. I feel like the famous elephant trying to walk on the spiders web.

Article in english.

The Dagens Nyheter article

Sunday, April 3rd, 2005

The journalist that got a little help from me a couple of months ago, was published in the todays issue of Dagens Nyheter, the major news paper in Sweden. It’s 10 pages about the catastrophe and the heading is “The lost paradise – The life in Khao Lak after the wave.” The header is a tad misleading tho… the article is mostly about what happened to a handfull of people when the waves hit.

Its the story of Douglas and Mai, a Mr Lek (his real name is Yanyoung Khorpetch, hotel owner), Kong (real name is Wandee Kongpan, working at La Flora), Ria from Denmark (co-owner of Viking restaurant in central Khao Lak) and Kai the tailor (Weeraphong Koomsaard).

There is no pictures of Mai’s Quiet Zone. The tree on the front page just might be the tree where the swing once where… but I need to ask the journalist about that. There is a small picture of Mai.
